A college student in Seattle and the boyfriend of Lorelei and Rachel. He first appeared in Good Intentions and is the primary protagonist of the Good Intentions series.

Biography[]

Alexander Carlisle—usually just Alex—was born October 31, on Halloween.[1] He grew up in Seattle with his mother Michelle after an ugly divorce caused by his father’s serial infidelities, enough so that Michelle reverted to her maiden name and changed Alex’s name too.[2][3] The divorce probably happened when Alex was between eight and ten.[4]

He got to know Drew, Jason, and Wade in grade school. He also knew Taylor in high school and developed a crush on her. After an early graduation from high school he attempted to enlist in the Army together with Wade, but was rejected after failing some psychological and physical tests. Instead, he began studying at the North Seattle Community College and working part-time at the law firm Keating & Rose.[5] He was an ambitious student, making the dean’s list during his first year.[6]

Meeting Rachel and Lorelei[]

Alex had begun his second year of college when he attempted to impress Molly and Onyx in his photography class. He trespassed on the Sacred Heart cemetery, intending to take photographs of the statues there—instead, he stumbled upon Garrison’s ritual to bind Rachel and Lorelei. He accidentally became the ritual’s focus, binding them to him. His attempt to rescue the two was successful but also caused the Sacred Heart cemetery fire.[7]

Contact with the supernatural and being the prey of a succubus caused great upheavals in Alex’s life, perhaps most importantly becoming the boyfriend of first Lorelei and later Rachel. He became the target of both criminals and demons intent on revenge against Lorelei, as well as drawing the interest of many women. The Pacific Place events involved him having a tryst with Taylor and the two being kidnapped by criminals who had the goal of blackmailing Lorelei. This was followed by the pool hall fight, which introduced Drew, Jason, and Wade to the Shadows.[8][9] Lorelei invited Taylor to a series of trysts with both her and Alex at Sherri’s party.[10]

Alex was kidnapped the following Monday by the Brotherhood of Apollo and vampires of Anastacia’s court. He was given an overdose of a potion meant to sharpen memories by Lydia, as part of her sexual assault of him.[11] This triggered a flood of memories from Alex’s past lives. He freed himself from captivity during the Battle of Blackthorne manor and killed Baal in order to rescue Lorelei, permanently marking him with the supernatural.[12] Lorelei, Rachel, and Alex moved together into Suite 1705 soon thereafter.[13][14]

Fallout from Blackthorne manor[]

In late October Alex was fired from his job at Keating & Rose, due to false accusations of sexual harassment from two superiors whose sexual advances he had refused.[15]

He also suffered from Post Traumatic Reincarnation Disorder: an abundance of unprocessed and often traumatic memories from his past lives which caused emotional distress and flashbacks.[15][16] A confrontation with Diana, a werewolf intent on making Alex her mate, proved especially triggering.

At his 20th birthday party at the Emerald City Halloween Ball he was abducted by vampires investigating the disappearance of Anastacia’s court. He, together with Jason and Amber Maddox, fought in the Battle of the Bus Tunnel and escaped after Rachel’s intervention.[1][17] This made the issue with his past memories even more acute. A major ritual by Molly and Onyx managed to treat them and bring them under control.[18] This also opened the way for the three of them to start a relationship.[19][20]

Shortly afterwards he was arrested by the Special Task Force led by Joseph Hauser.[21] He attempted to defuse the situation when Lorelei came to break him out, but instead Donald attacked her and the Special Task Force took her captive too.[22] The building where they were kept were assaulted by a combined force of vampires and werewolfes in the Battle of Magnuson Park. After the conclusion of the battle Alex and his friends were released by the Special Task Force and declared protected witnesses by it, as the force’s interim leadership realized they lacked any form of solid case against them and that the Crew had saved them.[23][24]

In early December he assisted Molly and Onyx in house-hunting and investigating House 12573. He was also introduced to magic by them.[25]

At University of Washington[]

In January he transferred to the University of Washington. His initial focus was on history, but he was still undecided on a major.[26] He accompanied Molly and Onyx to a meeting of Seattle’s Practitioners, and played a pivotal role in fighting off the combined assault of the Light and Azazel’s demons during the Battle of the Casino. However, a botched spell teleported him to Iraq, where he encountered and saved Rico’s team, only to have them try to take him captive when they found out he knew Lorelei.

He had managed to fight free when Rachel found him stranded in Iraq. She managed to smuggle him through Syria to Beirut, where they sought out Zafirah’s help. However, they had to fight past Sammael, who wanted to “reclaim” Lorelei as a lover by killing Alex.[27] Zafirah provided magical transportation to Seattle, where they arrived at the height of the Battle of Suite 1705. Sammael had however followed and flew off with Alex. Rachel and Lorelei pursued, and Lorelei finally killed Sammael after he had been seriously weakened by Alex.[28]

The earlier events still had consequences. One of them was that Alex’s bond to Lorelei as her master was broken, after she had claimed Baal’s crown.[29][30] Others were more external, such as ill feelings from other residents of the building and demons now free on the mortal plane.[31] He could however continue to study at university.[32]

Debt to Zafirah[]

As the price for her assistance, Zafirah had asked for three days and three nights of service from Alex.[27] In March she claimed this service. Alex first had to obtain an invitation to a party by illicit means. The attempt at a simple break-in turned violent when the apartment proved occupied. Alex was assisted by Wade and Jason as snipers in the fight.[33][34]

When Zafirah’s mission turned out to involve a threat against Onyx from the Family in Vancouver, most of the Crew participated in it.[35] Alex went to the Family party as Zafirah’s escort where he befriended Katerina Sorrow and had to endure many crude and not so crude attempts at seduction. Alex finally let himself be seduced by Michiko in order to give Zafirah access to her rooms. The attempt backfired, and Michiko was killed by Lilith, who both questioned and gave a warning to Alex.[36]

Zafirah and Alex left separately. Alex’s attempt at extraction turned violent as he was challenged by Gerhardt Stein. An attempted intervention by Rachel left her severely wounded, but Alex and Lorelei managed to escape the building. Alex then used the new habit of various guardian angels to prank call him to gain assistance from the local angels and evade pursuit.[37] He contacted Katerina to gain help in finding and catching the Family.[38] During the following Battle of the Silver Delta he killed Gerhardt Stein.[39]

The initial contact with Zafirah in March caused Alex’s phone number to become widely spread amongst the guardian angels. Some guardians took advantage of this, routing phone calls to him through the guardian angel switchboard. This included both pranks and genuine calls for help.[40] Rachel attempted to put a stop to this, but it proved hard to end.[41]

After especially the Battle of the Casino, Alex had become more well-known and familiar within the Practitioner community. He accompanied Molly and Onyx to a book faire in Olympia.[42] He was also approached by the International circle in order to free one of their members who had been taken hostage by a rival circle.[43] He and Drew also had to confront a supernatural cult while accompanying Drew’s mother Leticia as she bought second-hand furniture.

Reputation[]

Through his adventures and accomplishments Alex gained more than a bit of fame in the Shadows, and it had reached places as far as Hell and Portland.[29][42] Zafirah increased that when she gave him the epithet Scourge of Hell at the Family party. However, a lot of what spread was inaccurate or based on rumors.[44][45][42] He also developed a reputation for kindness and generosity within Seattle’s homeless population.[41]

Apart from this, there was purely mundane gossip around him.[46] This included videos of him being arrested,[21][47] fights at parties,[10] and older women—the last a reference to Lorelei, but possibly also Molly and Onyx. Surprisingly little of this had however reached his mother Michelle.[48]

Personal[]

As a person, Alex was outgoing, loyal to his friends, ready to help other people in need, and with a strong sense of fairness. He regularly reached out to new people during school.[46] However, he was crippled by low self confidence and self-doubt.[49] The removal of Donald’s influence, his status as Lorelei’s prey, his adventures, and Molly’s and Onyx’s help all combined to make him supremely confident and capable. He also developed a temper and aggressive side, perhaps especially against bullies or unfair slights, but usually managed to keep it under control.

Alex was heterosexual with a preference for older, self-confident, and capable women. He was slim, about six feet tall, and good-looking with black hair. His hands had become discolored after they were injured during the Battle of Blackthorne manor. He usually preferred to dress in jeans, t-shirt, and a leather jacket, but Lorelei’s influence made him comfortable with fancier clothes.

After the Battle of Blackthorne manor he largely quit social media, with the exception of a trusted chat server shared with friends and some pick-up games online.[15][14] As a result of his past memories, he went from being a very moderate drinker to avoiding alcohol.[50][51]

In sexual situations Alex usually focused on pleasing his partner or partners first.[25][52] He had come to prefer being chased rather than coming on to and seducing any woman who caught his fancy. He was however very capable of taking an aggressive or dominating role, if he decided to do so.[53] He wasn’t usually interested in sex for sex’s sake, but preferred to build an emotional connection first.[54] He had some interest in domination play as a switch and as sexual spice, and did some exploration of that with Lorelei, primarily involving mind control.[34] However, the sexual and mental torture he suffered under Lydia and later cases of being handcuffed made him fearful of physical restraints.[34] His experience with Michiko made him realize that he had little taste for using seduction as a tool.[36]

Alex’s Post Traumatic Reincarnation Disorder was mostly under control after the ritual by Molly and Onyx. External situations could still trigger a memory at times, which in turn could trigger more memories.[47]

Relationships[]

Alex had good relations with his mother Michelle and his maternal grandparents, though his relation with his grandfather Roy Carlisle became complicated by memories of past lives.[3] He had little contact with his father or his father’s family, but viewed Drew as a brother and Leticia as a mother.[55][3] He was troubled by the continual need to keep his involvement in the Shadows away from his family.[48]

He lived in an open polyamorous relationship with Lorelei and Rachel. He also had an important secondary relationship with Molly and Onyx.

Following him meeting Lorelei he had many different trysts, notably with Audrey, Taylor, Jocelyn, Victoria,[13][56] Claire,[26] and Cassie.[32] Both Lorelei and Rachel were highly encouraging of further dalliances, and arguably more interested in him pursuing those than he himself was.[26]

He has a large group of friends, starting with the Crew, but it also included gaming groups and more casual acquaintances from school.[57][46] His earlier social life was however impacted by his several girlfriends and his contact with the Shadows.[14]

Alex’s guardian angel was Donald until the events in the Sacred Heart cemetery, after which Rachel replaced him.[6] However, only a week later she stepped up to holding Dominion of Seattle. He was without a formal guardian angel since then.[58]

Abilities[]

Alex had mainly mundane abilities, but his various experiences and the awakening of memories from past lifes made him far more skilled, and in many more areas, than could be expected of a young man. He had also developed some limited supernatural abilities.

Mundane[]

Physically, Alex was a young man in good health, about six feet tall and with a slim build.[7][59] He was observant and could keep a clear head even in dangerous situations. He had developed a magnetic presence and had turned into a natural leader in a crisis. As a lover he was both talented and considerate. He could unclasp a bra with a single hand and without looking, implying a high degree of manual dexterity.[52]

Alex had a number of skills from his past lives. He knew several languages, including French, German, Spanish, Latin, ancient Greek, and some basic Vietnamese. Other languages had largely become unusable due to language drift.[43] He was a good piano player and had a foundation in sailing, navigation, and seamanship.[21][60] He also knew how to tie a bow tie.[61]

He had excellent practical martial skills originating from various civilizations and ages, from the use of melee weapons to thrown weapons to firearms. He was skilled in unarmed combat and in using improvised weaponry. Developing the physical strength and stamina to go with these skills was however an ongoing and probably slow effort, though he took some kung fu classes together with Drew.[39][62]

In high school he made the swimming team without excelling and was also good at track and field.[10][63] Known college classes taken at North Seattle were literature, biology, philosophy, human sexuality, photography,[64] first aid,[6][65] dancing[21], and psychology.[66] Most of these were intro classes.[64] At UW known classes were ancient, medieval,[33] and African history.[32]

Supernatural[]

Being Lorelei’s prey gave him increased sexual appeal, improved looks, and greater stamina, especially sexual endurance, though most of these changes were marginal. The succubus curse caused him to easily find himself in situations where he could find sexual partners. He was however reluctant to use these abilities actively, afraid that he might misuse it or hurt his various partners.[40][53] The curse also prevented him from becoming sick, at least from mundane illnesses.[67]

After he killed Baal with Rachel’s angelic blade his hands became scarred beyond the physical, apparent to various forms of supernatural perception.[44][68] This essentially turned him into a living weapon able to hurt, kill or outright destroy supernatural beings through mundane means.[69] See also § Hands stained with immortal blood.

Alex developed a resistance or partial immunity against mind control. This came through earlier encounters but was also actively developed by Lorelei. The latter was done partially as a consensual kink, and partially as a way to build tolerance.[34][43] He was given a very basic introduction to magic and its workings by Molly and Onyx, and knew some theory from books and experience.[25][45] There are however no indications that made magic or rituals a part of his everyday life or routines.

He might have developed a limited empathic sense, see § Connection with Lorelei and Rachel below. He had some limited ability to recognize demons, likely based on consciously noticing his own subconscious reactions to a demon. It was however not particularly reliable, and there had been both false positives and false negatives.[31][54]

Possessions[]

Alex owned a quarter-stake in Ahmed Kovac’s pool hall since the pool hall fight, giving him a small but regular income.[10] His regular transportation was a black motorcycle with the plates ZTN-123.[56][51] He had bought pepper spray as part of his preparations for going to the Sacred Heart cemetery, and carried it regularly since.[7][15]

His “arsenal of bullshit” contained several weapons scrounged from earlier opponents, and included an assault rifle, a longsword, at least two daggers, a Colt 1911 pistol and a gladius—a Roman shortsword.[41] The latter two had been enchanted by Onyx to make them easier to hide, and could pass being touched during a patdown.[70][44] The gladius might also have received additional enchantment from Zafirah, as she had it sharpened.[33] Despite this he usually went unarmed, except for possibly the pepper spray.[47][43][48]

Theories[]

Various theories and analysis of Alex’s life.

Social skills and observations[]

Alex had good social skills and was a good observer, but sometimes failed to connect the dots or draw the proper conclusions in socal settings. He picked up that Molly and Onyx were close, but failed to understand that they were a couple, despite Onyx telling him that she was mainly into girls and was seeing someone.[9][71] He missed the hints from Drew about being bisexual.[72] He failed to pick up some of the hints and implications from Brooke at Ben Palmer’s party, something which Lorelei also commented on.[73]

Donald and past lives[]

It was likely that Alex’s deep trauma due to past memories was at least partially caused by Donald’s actions as guardian, leaving Alex with more than his fair share of traumatic memories that were never properly processed. This included both the pushes towards heroism and the limited time spent in Heaven between reincarnations.[10]

Alex’s failure in the evaluation before enlistment was at least partially caused by a subconscious resistance from Alex against Donald’s influence.[74] Donald believed that this resistance was enabled by Onyx’s magic in their past lives as Elena and Simon.[22] One possibility for how that happened was that Elena’s spell connected Alex’s and Onyx’s souls to each other, to ensure they would meet again. Since they both were in the Seattle area, him joining the army would considerably lessen the probability of them meeting for a long time.

Another possible case of attempted influence from Donald was that Alex had dreamt of being a police officer while younger. In this case the resistance could have been seeking out and talking with sensible veteran cops.[6]

Alex usually associated rage and anger with Skorri, but he had developed a greater aggressiveness himself soon after meeting Rachel and Lorelei. It was shown in his various confrontations and fights before exposure to the memory potion, like against T-Mobile Boy,[6] in the fight at Pacific Place,[8] and when fighting Gabriel and his posse.[10] Two possible but not exclusive causes were becoming the prey of a succubus or from ingesting part of Lorelei’s and Rachel’s essences during the fight in the Sacred Heart chapel.[7]

Connection with Lorelei and Rachel[]

Alex had several connections with both Lorelei and Rachel. As he fought Garrison he ingested some of their respective essences, something which might have affected him on a spiritual or supernatural level. He also became Lorelei’s prey, which formed another spiritual bond between the two.

Possible evidence of a close and atypical connection between Rachel and Alex are that he was able to see her even when she was invisible to other people, at which point her wings and halo always were visible to him.[48][52] He could also see her wings when they were hidden for other people without supernatural sight.[59] Alex said that she was “like a road crew lamp only I can see” and noted that Rachel’s insight was especially strong concerning himself, even if she could not read his or anyone else’s mind.[73] A last possible indication was that Rachel’s sword kept flaming as Alex wielded it during the fight with Baal.[12] The last is however speculative since we have not seen other mortals try to wield angelic swords, but they seem to appear, disappear, and flame at the will of the angel.[75]

Alex’s great ability to please his partners, both emotionally and sexually, might have been fully natural. It might also be helped by a subconscious emphatic sense for lusts and desires, much like the one a succubus has. This could either be something every prey of a succubus gained or a result of the ingestion of Lorelei’s and Rachel’s essences.

Hands stained with immortal blood[]

After Alex killed Baal and later also fought against Sammael, Alex’s hands were stained with their blood. This was visible to people with the ability to see or perceive auras.[33] As a result, Alex could kill or destroy supernatural beings, though the exact effects are not fully clear.

Vampires seemed to be as vulnerable to Alex as to any other mortal with similar knowledge and fighting skills. Against werewolves at the Battle of Magnuson Park, Alex had little effect using Bjorn’s sword.[76] He had better luck against werewolves during the Family party, but it might have been due to the spear he used, which Lorelei and himself identified as possibly magical. The spear was also effective against a gargoyle automata.[75] Alex also thought that he was able to affect the watcher spirit through the knife he held.[43] He destroyed Masood using his gladius.[69] It is unclear if the sword assisted him in this, e.g. through acting as a channel for Alex’s hands.

Demons varied. He had little ability to hurt Karma, Chance, or Destiny except when he used the shards of a soul mirror.[50] Against the skin-less Xazzal, Alex was surprised by his ability to hurt the demon, but it still did not appear to be much more than e.g. Drew managed during his fight against Sylyd.[31][3] He was able to destroy the skin of a creeper demon, and possibly also hurt the demon wearing the skin.[41]

Jinn and mortal Practitioners demonstrated the ability to perceive the immortal blood. However, there are no known cases of demons—except Lilith—reacting to his hands. This included Evelyn, who had Alex pointed out to her by Sammael, despite being a very capable sorcerer herself.[70] This hints that most demons were unable to perceive Baal’s and Sammael’s blood.

So far, the exact limits and possibilities of this ability are not fully known.

Sexual relations development[]

Alex went through several stages in how he approached sexual and romantic relations after meeting Lorelei. The first stage was one of largely unbridled freedom, where he would welcome and follow up sexual invitations—and in the case of Onyx and Jocelyn taking some of the initiative. This lasted until the Battle of Blackthorne manor, with a key event being the awakening of past memories and possibly also Lydia’s sexual assault on him.[11] He had however already started to have second thoughts about the number of temporary sexual relations, or when “he’d have to dial it back”.[59]

The second stage saw him largely eschewing casual or temporary sexual relations as well as possible additional romantical relations. He had a farewell hook-up with Taylor, but he kept a distance from Onyx, despite her attempts to keep in touch with him.[56][77] Several factors likely contributed to this, apart from his earlier second thoughts and having been sexually assaulted by Lydia. One was that having one rule for Lorelei and one for him on other sexual partners troubled him due to the double standard.[15] Another was that his troubled mental state due to past memories possibly led him to not fully trusting himself.[15][78]

The two exceptions to this were Cindy and Victoria the realtor. Cindy was in reality Lorelei in disguise, and it is possible that the supernatural connection between Alex and Lorelei subconsciously assured him that Cindy was a “safe” person to approach and seduce.[15] In the case of Victoria he had been assured by both Lorelei and Rachel that she was interested in a fling with no further strings attached.[13]

The third stage began after the ritual that settled his past memories. This gave him the confidence to trust himself and thus also his emotional understanding of potential partners. The time spent with Molly and Onyx crafting the ritual also led to a greater understanding of their consent and their desires for him.[18][19]

Aside: Elliott Kay has a blog post about Lorelei’s and Bridger’s tryst in Natural Consequences, Alex’s reaction to it, and his thoughts around them: Lorelei Isn’t Sorry. Alex Isn’t Sorry. I’m Not Sorry.

After Lorelei’s tryst with Bridger, Alex and Lorelei re-negotiated the constraints on her temporary relations.[23][79] This solved his issues with having a double standard regarding sexual behavior for him and Lorelei.[32] He was still careful with temporary sexual relations, and the only known one was with Claire, which had been together with Lorelei.[26] His focus was rather on maintaining and deepening his existing romantic relations.

Alex’s views on himself and sexuality gradually progressed to a fourth stage. He became confident in his ability to determine and negotiate consent, and in his ability to maintain his other relationships. That meant he again became ready and willing to follow up and answer invitations to temporary sexual relations.[32][54] He also became ready to be more sexually forceful and aggressive within all his existing relationships, as shown in his quickie with Molly before the Family party.[53] At the same time, he still wanted to fundamentally like his partners and feel an emotional connection with them.[36]

Trivia[]

Alexander is of Greek origin: Ἀλέξανδρος, or transliterated Aléxandros. It has the meaning of “defender of the people” or “protector of men”.[80]

Alex’s job at Keating & Rose was likely inspired by Elliott Kay’s earlier job as a law firm file clerk.[81]

Alex faced at least one abduction attempt or arrest per book. So far the list includes the Pacific Place events,[5] by Lydia’s allies,[59] by Cornelius’s vampires,[82] by the Special Task Force,[21] at the end of the Battle of the Casino,[83][84] by Sammael,[85] and Seattle police.[47]

He has had to face at least one unwanted sexual advance per book. So far the list includes Lydia,[86], Susan—mentioned only—, Olivia, Diana,[15] Zafirah—partially a misunderstanding—,[27] an unnamed tentacled woman,[68] and Michiko.[29]
