“But your film sounds awesome and now you’ve got secret funding. That’s a good start for a heist, right?” — Spoilers for Grand Theft Sorcery follow.
An agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Jason’s girlfriend. She first appeared in Natural Consequences.
Biography[]
Amber Maddox grew up in Seattle, unappreciated by her family and largely friendless in school, but excelled academically. She graduated from University of Washington with majors in chemistry and physics at age 20, after which she joined the FBI as a forensic scientist. After three years in their lab she switched over to the Criminal Investigative Division and was there a year. From there Joseph Hauser recruited her to the Special Task Force in Los Angeles after a test that involved apprehending a vampire.[1]
Mission to Seattle[]
In her first full mission with the task force, Amber was to approach Jason Cohen under cover, as he was their one lead of investigating the disappearance of Anastacia’s court after the Battle of Blackthorne manor.[2]
After her first initial contact with Jason she was invited by him to meet several of his friends, i.e. the Crew. Lorelei performed a mind wipe of her evening after she witnessed Alex Carlisle suffering visibly from his past memories. When Bridger undid the mind wipe it confirmed the Crew as a group of interest for the investigation.[3] She went as Jason’s date to the Emerald City Halloween Ball where she was abducted by Rosario together with Alex and Jason. She participated in the following Battle of the Bus Tunnel.[4]
Amber’s actions and presence proved troublesome for both Lorelei, Rachel, the task force, and herself. She gathered important intelligence for the task force, but she and Jason had developed strong feelings for each other as well, something that would complicate any future prosecution.[5] Hauser was dismissive about both her feelings and her legal concerns when she brought them to him.[6] Rachel was aware that Amber was a federal agent, but was prohibited from intervening as long as supernatural forces weren’t involved. Amber’s guardian angel Theresa was deeply disapproving of Rachel. Lorelei was suspicious of Amber, partly from picking up cues from her and partly from watching Rachel’s reactions. She attempted to make Amber open up after the Battle of the Bus Tunnel, but failed to do so.
Battle of Magnuson Park[]
After the Battle of the Bus Tunnel, Amber attempted to make the investigation less confrontational towards the Crew, but was overruled by Hauser.[5] Instead she was tasked to arrest Jason. She did that, but was then in turn confronted and taken captive by Lorelei, who had received notice of Alex’s arrest from Molly Murray. They drove to Magnuson Park, where Lorelei attempted to free Alex, but Hauser captured her with help from Donald. Jason was arrested and Amber freed.[7]
Amber was together with Lanier, Colleen, and several members of the tac team when the first group of vampires attempted to infiltrate the building. She was the only member of that group who managed to escape death or capture, partially thanks to assistance from Theresa. She joined Jason, Wade, Drew, and Bridger in a defensive position and to help cover Alex and Lorelei in their counterattack.[8]
Relationship with Jason[]
After the battle of Magnuson Park she and Jason initiated a long-distance relationship.[9] Following the Battle of the Casino she acted as the liaison between the Task Force and the Crew.[10][11] She participated in the Battle of Suite 1705, providing the Crew with vital legal cover and guidance.[12]
Jason also started planning a move to Los Angeles and they moved together in Amber’s apartment in Los Angeles in April or May.[13][14]
She was reprimanded over her actions during the investigaton of Anastacia’s court and the Crew, but remained with the task force under Sanderson, its new permanent boss.[14] She was however on probation during the investigation of the hill house party. During the hill house heist her driving managed to corner Evan Murphy and Sunday, but she was badly wounded by Oscar Torres and his hit squad. She was healed by Evan, but Sanderson shot him, causing her doubts about his values and judgment to rise markedly.
She acted as liaison with Molly and Onyx as they were called in as assist with the investigation.[15] After Onyx had discovered traces of Evan’s magic, Amber, Molly, and Onyx confronted Evan, Sunday, and Barstow at the end of the battle of Westview Tower. They were in turn attacked and captured by vampires, leading to the battle of Fifteen Percent. Afterwards, Amber questioned Evan about the events and decided to let him go, partially because she realized he could not be proven to have committed any crimes, possibly also because she realized she cared more about her morals than the job. She was fired by Sanderson over this.[16]
Relations[]
Amber had a committed relationship with Jason.[17] She had poor relations with her parents.[13] Within the Special Task Force Colleen Nguyen served as her mentor.
Her guardian angel was Theresa.[18]
Abilities[]
Amber was highly observant and had developed good skills in directing a conversation, enough so that Lorelei commented on it.[14][2] She was a skilled forensic scientist and technician with a strong knowledge in especially chemistry. She knew how to use several firearms and other tactical equipment.
Possessions[]
Amber lived in an apartment in a six-story building somewhere in Los Angeles.[19]
After her experience fighting werewolves in Seattle she acquired a limited amount of silver-tipped bullets.[20]
