Arson is an important concept in the Good Intentions Series. See also the arson warning tag.
General[]
Fire can be both destructive and cleansing, and is a weapon for both angels and demons. It can also spread naturally and serve to destroy and conceal evidence in a way that is understandable and explainable in a mundune investigation.[1] That makes arson into a potent weapon and tool within the Shadows.
Angelic and demonic fire also seems to have the property to spread easily, and at least angels are highly capable of fanning the flames of an existing fire, making it run far hotter.[2][3]
Examples[]
The Sacred Heart Cemetery was set on fire by Lorelei and destroyed.[2]
Taylor drove a burning SUV into Blackthorne Manor during the battle there, but the fire was extinguished by Molly when she blew a strong wind through the manor.[4] After the battle, Rachel set fire to the manor again and made sure it burnt to the ground.[5][1]
Both the Sacred Heart and the Blackthorne fires were of major interest to the Special Task Force. They also noted that the two fires were similar.[1]
Serena set fire to Jack’s apartment, complicating Rachel’s fight with her and drawing first responders.[6]
Rachel set off an expanding circle of fire during the Battle of the Bus Tunnel, but it did not cause major structural damage.[7][8]
Lorelei and Alex set fire to the demon strip club Vixens, and Rachel made sure the fire burnt the structure to the ground and below.[3]
While recovering her stolen car, Lorelei tossed an opened gas can into an office trailer and threatened to set it on fire. She also planned arson to draw notice to and break up the car fencing operation. It is unclear if she actually set the trailer on fire.[9]
The Battle of the Casino saw several fires started in the casino and hotel, but they were all put out by the sprinkler systems and firefighters.[10][11]
While escaping the Family party, Alex set fire to the bar and Wade set off a fuel bomb in the cellar. The latter fire was extinguished by Teheret.[12][13]
Carlo planned to burn down Sunday’s home in order to hide the pillaging of it. While the pillaging was halted, the arson was successful.[14]
While on another plane, Amanda set fire to Bel-Danab’s tower in a room that she had stacked with incendiary and volatile chemicals. It caused a huge explosion and the destruction of the structure.[15]
Historical examples[]
While she was still a mortal woman, Lorelei set fire to her abusive husband’s home and had it burn to the ground in order to cover her murder of him.[16]
One of Skorri’s preferred tactics was to block the exits of a house and set it on fire. This is historically correct.[17][18]
Talking about arson[]
The Crew is aware of the way arson follows in their wake.
Alex mentioned “averaging an arson a month” as Vixens is burning down.[3]
Sierra mentioned “all the arson and rampant fucking in this crowd” when planning the trip to Vancouver.[19]
Wade said the Silver Delta “prob’ly gonna get set on fire” if the Crew intercepted it.[20]
Alex said “If you want to fuck around, we can skip straight to the part where everything’s on fire” to a cult leader.[21]
Jason mentioned the “marshmallow arson” that possibly Alex was guilty of in a high school class.[22]
Alex mentioned “setting stuff on fire” when discussing a possible supernatural plot as the cause of the Covid pandemic.[23]
Evan Murphy considered that he could set a fire in order to facilitate a rescue from the cellar where he was trapped.[24]
