An angel of Heaven. He was first mentioned in Good Intentions, but his first appearance was in Natural Consequences.
Biography[]
Donald served as a guardian angel already in classical times. After the Battle of Marathon he became the guardian of the soul of a brave and well-spoken Greek farmer.[1] He continued as guardian for this soul for all of its reincarnations until modern times, pushing it towards heroic sacrifices and quick reincarnations.[2][3]
Heroic self-sacrifice was and is highly regarded by Heaven, and Donald gained a reputation of being a good guardian angel.[2] However, the many short and violent lives with little rest in Heaven caused long-term stress on the reincarnated soul.[1][4]
Guardian angel for Alex[]
Donald’s plans for the current incarnation of Alex’s soul suffered a setback when Alex failed in his enlistment tests for the army.[5] He started to view Alex as a failure and blamed Elena’s contant with Simon at the end of World War II for this.[6]. In September he saw a chance to make Alex a hero in the Sacred Heart cemetery.[7] Donald unlocked the door to the chapel, allowing Alex in, but ran away himself when he saw another angel—Rachel—bound and tortured.[8][6] He thus played no further part in the Sacred Heart cemetery fire.
As a result, Donald was removed as Alex’s guardian and replaced by Rachel.[8]
Donald attempted to regain access to Alex through Joseph Hauser, one of his other wards and the leader of the Special Task Force. The Task Force was already investigating the Battle of Blackthorne manor, and Donald influenced Hauser to focus the investigation on Lorelei and Rachel. The goal was to discredit Rachel as Dominion and destroy or banish Lorelei.[6][2] This contributed to making the investigation more expansive and more belligerent than originally planned. Donald also attempted to influence Alex again while he was detained by the task force.
Magnuson Park and afterwards[]
Donald avoided contact with Rachel, but was exposed when Lorelei was taken captive by the task force.[6] In order to salvage his plan, Donald manipulated Hauser to expose the location of Alex and the rest of the Crew to Unferth, and through him George Wentworth and Diana. This caused the Battle of Magnuson Park.
During the battle, Donald was revealed to both Alex and Hauser, causing a mental breakdown for the latter.[3] The following hearing of Heaven stripped Donald of his status as a guardian and reduced his powers to his essence. He was demoted to serving as a messenger between angels, with no interaction with mortals allowed.[9][4]
Donald placed some of the blame of his current misfortunes on Elena and her current incarnation Onyx due to the blessings and spells she laid on Simon. He often also used racist and sexist language when referring to Elena–Onyx and Lorelei, and called them monsters.[3]
Relationships[]
Donald served as the guardian of Alex and Hauser until his demotion to messenger only. After his demotion all interaction with mortals was disallowed.[4]
