Various spirits of flame.
General[]
Jinn—sometimes also spelled djinn—are spirits of flame made flesh and beings of two planes, one of which is the mortal plane.[1] They are neither divine, demonic, nor mortal.[2] As supernatural beings some are users of magic, and they can associate somewhat more freely with angels and demons. They are also very numerous, likely more common than vampires.[3]
There are several types of jinn, and they tend to be as moral or pleasant as any individual mortal.[4] The si’lat are tricksters.[3] The ifrit (or efreet) are generally unpleasant. Another lesser type is the ghul that can inhabit and animate dead bodies. This is apparently a rather new behaviour; they used to primarily act as voices in the desert leading travelers astray.[5]
Family bonds can be very important for jinn. One example is that Omar chose his family over continuing his relation with Sunday.[6] Los Angeles has a sizable jinn community.
Abilities[]
Many jinn are capable users of magic. They can change shape, turn themselves invisible, and make themselves into clouds of dust. When disembodied they can cross a city like Los Angeles in seconds.[7][8]
They are sensitive to iron.[9]
