“Her Dread Majesty Katerina Sorrow, Ghost-Queen of the Northern Coast.”
Past Due, chapter 13
An undead girl in Vancouver, with abilities related to the dead and the ocean. She first appeared in Past Due.
Biography[]
Katerina was an unpopular girl in her final year of high school. She was pushed off a boat in the Vancouver harbor in September and drowned. Instead of dying, she ended up in an undead state, still in control of her body and with several supernatural powers.[1][2]
“Because you’re a sweet kid and I like you and whatever happened to you is some extra weird eldritch wank-fuck stumbled-through-the-back-door-on-a-banana-peel-transcendence bullshit.”
— Rachel, Past Due, chapter 27
She met Alex at the reception hosted by the Family. Meeting Alex proved a revelation to her, as her earlier contacts with the Shadows had been limited to “wizards and monsters”.[3] After the Family had escaped Vancouver on the Silver Delta she helped Alex and the Crew to locate and intercept the yacht. This led to the Battle of the Silver Delta. She was first overwhelmed by the battle, but discovered both new abilities and how to contribute to the Crew. She took the yacht as a prize after the battle, renaming it Revenge.[2]
She thinks she is better off with her new undead life.[1] As a person she was shy and lonely, but with a quirky sense of humour. This together with bluntness has come to the fore after her death.[4]
It is unknown how Katerina ended up in her undead state. Rachel sees the abortion of the reincarnation process as very strange, and plans to look into it.[4]
Relations[]
She describes her old home life as “pretty shitty”, but she connected strongly with the Crew.[1][4]
Her guardian angel is likewise unknown.
Abilities[]
Katerina can control the seas, including the weather, shipwrecks, and the drowned. Her powers were sufficient that the Family had respect for them.[5]
She can lead others into a realm—or plane—of death where drowned sailors reside, to cut down on travel time across the seas.[6] In the fight on the Silver Delta, she showed the ability to rip the souls out of people.[7]
She has a similar ability to angels to become disembodied, passing through walls or letting objects pass through her.[8]
She can see souls the moment their body dies, an ability that only angels previously were known to have. She cannot however see angels unless they choose to be visible.[8]
Possessions[]
Katerina owns the megayacht Revenge, formerly the Silver Delta, which she claimed as a prize after the Battle of the Silver Delta. Zafirah has assisted her in obtaining legal title and other necessary records.[9]
Theories[]
Katerina was in her final year of high school, implying she was 16 or 17 years old when she died.[2] It is also stated that “all characters are age eighteen or over”.[10] This means that she probably turned 18 sometime between January and March year 1.
Compare Brittany, Shannon Abrams, and Antonia Vega, who also came in contact with the supernatural when it could have been prevented.
