A police officer and Molly’s uncle. He first appeared, unnamed, in Good Intentions.
Biography[]
Kevin Murray served as an airborne soldier in Afghanistan.[1] When his niece Molly Murray was thrown out by her family due to being bisexual and a pagan, he took her in and helped her finish high school.[2] His other activities after mustering out are unknown until he joined the Seattle Police Department at age 29.[1]
Within the Seattle police he was partnered with Tyrone Johnson.[1] He quickly gained a reputation for both finding himself in violent situations and finishing them,[3] earning the nickname Officer ShootsYourAss.[1][4] In particular he was involved in a shootout and car chase while totally naked in June, making him involved in four shootings in only two years as an officer.[1] Three patrol cars were totaled under his purview in a single year.[5]
Over a few short hours, Shannon had gotten to know Kevin Murray. She’d taken the measure of the man. Underneath that humble, self-deprecating grin and gentle demeanor, she found the tough spirit of a veteran of war and police work. Like Shannon, he found many frustrations with his job and his co-workers. Still, he persevered. She couldn’t imagine him being cowed by any mortal man…
Halloween for Life
He also had several encounters involving the Shadows. In September he and Tyrone detained Kenneth of the Brotherhood of Apollo and his muscle after their failed kidnapping attempt of Molly and Onyx.[5] In October he met Shannon just as she had ingested the spirit of a succubus. The two had a tryst the same night, and a few days later the two began dating.[4] He and Tyrone knew about vampires and had killed several, most notably George Wentworth. However, neither of them knew that Molly was a witch, nor of the Special Task Force.[6]
Personal[]
Despite his violent reputation, Kevin was a bit of a goofball, humble, gentle, and with a strong moral center. He was starting to have second thoughts about being a police officer, though it is unknown if he had acted upon them.[1][4]
Kevin was handsome with green eyes and dirty blonde hair.[4][1]
Relationships[]
Kevin lived with his cat Attila, who he shared a close bond with. He had a close relation with his niece Molly. His contact with the rest of their family is unknown. Onyx considered him to be hot and probably had a crush on him.
His romantic relationships usually didn’t last long. According to both Attila and Tyrone, it was because everyone he dated had been crazy.[1][6] He dated fellow police officer Claudia Esposito.[1][6] Ha may have developed an open relationship with Shannon Abrams.[4]
He was close friends with his partner Tyrone.
Abilities[]
Kevin was not particularly large, but he was strong and fit. He was an excellent unarmed fighter and shot with a pistol.[1]
He had some resistance against supernatural mind control and suggestions, enough to resist vampires but not to hold against Lorelei.[6][4]
Theories[]
Kevin’s time between mustering out from the military and joining the Seattle police has not been described. He claimed that he went through a lot of trouble to get the job there. He might have had to interrupt other plans when he helped Molly to get away from her parents and finish high school. He was probably between twenty-four and twenty-six at that time, given that he was only nine years older than her.
It is probable that Kevin is of Scottish or Irish descent given his name and that his niece Molly has naturally red hair.
Trivia[]
Kevin’s and Tyrone’s beats varies through the stories, and basically follows where the plot leads. In June or July they were working in downtown, that is the West precinct.[1] In September and then again in late October they were active in Capitol Hill, the East precinct.[5][4] The first days in November they were active around Magnuson park, the North precinct, and were also said to have been transferred from the South precinct.[6][3]
Molly’s and Onyx’s characterisation of Kevin as a Mary Sue coincides with that he is based on a LARP character played by Elliott Kay.[1][7]
