A city on the US west coast, and the setting for most of the Good Intentions Series. It first appeared in Good Intentions.
General[]
Seattle is a city on the US west coast, and the place where most of the Crew live, work, and study. Vampires refer to it as the “Dark Emerald City”.[1]
There is a partial interactive map over Seattle and the places where various events have taken place: Map of the Shadows of Seattle.
The Shadows[]
Seattle and environs developed a large presence of the Shadows, both in general and in comparison to its size. Anastacia’s court of vampires had over sixty members, and was one of the largest identified in the USA.[2] There were ghosts and several large circles, the largest of them being the Brotherhood of Apollo and the Light. At least six different Practices could be found. There were werewelves in the rural areas outside the city.[3] Demons were common, and relatively well-organized.[4]
The Practitioner community in Seattle was for a long time centered on Elizabeth Van Dalen, who through her power and diplomacy managed to keep the different factions at peace.[5] After her death at the hand of Leon, the Brotherhood of Apollo started to expand aggressively.[6][3]
The high activity of vampires, demons, and belligerent Practitioners was implied to be because of Vincent’s inactions as Dominion.[7][8] He was replaced by Rachel in September after the destruction of Anastacia’s court and the Brotherhood of Apollo at the Battle of Blackthorne Manor exposed his ineffectiveness as Dominion. Rachel was proactive in destroying and driving out demons, vampires, and belligerent sorcerers, a process that had already started with the Battle of Blackthorne Manor.[9] This was highly beneficial to the mundane life of the city, causing sharp drops in violent crime and missing person cases. Rachel was in turn replaced by Javier in January. Javier has continued several of her policies.[10] [8]
These events created a supernatural power vacuum in Seattle.[11][12] Rachel had to fight to keep “squiddies” and “tentacled shits” from moving into Elliott Bay.[13][14] More importantly, Azazel attempted to fill it using the Light as agents. This caused Battle of the Casino and the Battle of Suite 1705. The two battles between them might have killed more than a third of Seattle’s remaining Practitioner community. The resulting upheaval and tension within Seattle’s supernatural communities have only started to be resolved. One result is the agreement to treat Fremont and the University District as neutral grounds for Seattle’s Practitioners.[15]
A size estimate[]
The Shadows of Seattle contracted significantly with recent events, and large numbers of supernaturals were seldom gathered together to be counted. This should thus be considered a lower bound.
The Special Task Force estimated the vampire population to be at least 60. An upper bound of 120 seems reasonable, but numbers between 60 and 90 most likely.
Practitioner numbers were spread out over several circles. The Brotherhood had 17 members present at the Battle of Blackthorne Manor, with perhaps a few absent members.[16] The Light had over a dozen members.[17] At the meeting of the casino preceding the Battle of the Casino, Alex estimated the amount of people present before the arrival of the Light to be “a few dozen”, of which 14 died.{(Refped|c=6}}[18] Most but not necessarily all of them were Practioners. This means between 22 and 34 survivors, not counting Molly and Onyx.
A total of around 45 dead, incarcerated, or fleeing Practitioners means that up to two-thirds of Seattle’s Practitioners were lost between September and January. It also means that the Practitioner numbers were similar to the number of vampires, but that the vampires probably could dominate due to their greater organization.
