A large circle based in the Cascades, east of Seattle. It first appeared in Personal Demons.
History[]
The Spartan Light of Unconquered Cascadia—usually just the Light—was formed several years ago by a group of Practitioners, survivalists, and Doomsday preppers.[1]
The initial group appears to have been Leon and his boyhood friends Bill and Roger. The group expanded to over a dozen Practitioners and several mundane helpers. They based themselves in a compound owned by Coot in the Cascades east of Seattle, possibly in the mountains around Skykomish.[2]
Leon and the Light however sought greater power, and demanded assistance from Elizabeth Van Dalen to contact ‘the other side’, around four years ago. In response, Elizabeth cut her ties fully with them, the only known example of her doing so.[1][3]
“Yes. Take your ordinary paranoid Doomsday planners, add a handful of genuine Practitioners, and you get the Spartan Light of Unconquered Cascadia. Leon has divined the Apocalypse at least seven times since the turn of the century and has been disappointed every time. But still they believe, and still they prepare.”
— Elizabeth Van Dalen, Personal Demons, Prologue
Their continued efforts to gain magical power were answered by the demon Evelyn, thus beholding them to Azazel and Hell. With Evelyn’s assistance, they murdered Elizabeth three or four years later.[4] Elizabeth’s will contained nothing for the Light despite disbursing all her magical belongings widely among Seattle’s Practitioners, and no representative from them were present at the reading of the will.[3]
They were however invited to the meeting at the casino called by Kate and Jin.[3] There they attacked the other Practioners of Seattle, setting off the Battle of the Casino.[5] They planned a continued assault, but were defeated at the Battle of Suite 1705. Afterwards, the circle dissolved due to the death of many members and the Special Task Force arresting known survivors.[6]
Values[]
Compared to other known large circles, the Light appeared to be relatively egalitarian below Leon’s leadership. Killed muscle were given the same remembrance as killed Practitioners, the circle worked on a first-name basis, and had little use for ceremony or formal titles. Discipline and teamwork was however strong.[2][7]
